Some Days Are Just... A Lot.
Today was one of those days at Lucky Dog.
Heavy rains flooded portions of the shelter, leaving many of our dogs unable to leave their night kennels for most of the day.
Then, as volunteers were working through the flooding, a frightened little dog was literally handed to a volunteer and abandoned.
The person disappeared.
The dog stayed.
Not a cool move.
Meet Chip.
He's about a year old, appears very healthy, cute as a button, and was absolutely terrified when he first arrived.
Fortunately, some very soggy volunteers were able to convince him that not all humans disappear when things get scary.
And thankfully, because of the circumstances at the shelter today, Chip was able to go directly into a temporary foster home where he can decompress, dry off, and start his next chapter. (Not a normal situation).
He just deserved a better ending than the beginning he got today.
And while all of this was happening, the amazing Dean & David still managed to get most of our dogs out for short (albeit wet) walks.
After being stuck in their night kennels all day because of the flooding, those walks mean everything to them.
That's rescue.
Not perfect days.
But just doing what needs to be done for our dogs.
BE THE SOMEONE.
Most people can't adopt.
Many people can't foster.
But almost everyone can help.
Lucky Dog has been working on a series of shelter improvement projects, including:
Chain link kennel repairs
New gravel in high-traffic areas/inside the day kennels.
Improved drainage and French drain systems to address flooding during the heavy rains.
The weather is ahead of our budget.
The dogs' daily care is covered because our community consistently shows up for them.
The harder part is funding the infrastructure that allows us to keep showing up when unexpected days like today happen.
A flooded shelter.
Emergency repairs.
Another abandoned dog.
These are the moments that stretch a small rescue to its limits.
If you've ever wondered how you can help homeless dogs in our community, this is one of those opportunities.
Your donation won't just buy supplies.
It will help build a stronger, safer shelter for every dog who comes through our gates.
And maybe, just maybe, it will help make sure the next frightened little dog who arrives unexpectedly has somewhere to go.
As for Chip, check out our Blog update on him.
